A 24-year-old woman was critically injured after she was allegedly set on fire by her husband for refusing to give him money to buy liquor in Bhiwandi town of the district, police said today.

The incident occurred on January 21 when the woman, identified as Ashwini Magar, had an argument with her husband Amol Magar (26) who demanded money to buy alcohol, Thane Police PRO Sukhada Narkar said, adding that in a fit of rage, Amol doused his wife in Kerosene and set her ablaze.

On hearing her cries, neighbours of the Magars rushed to the spot and rushed Ashwini to civil hospital.

She suffered 80 per cent burn injuries in the incident and is currently battling for her life, Narkar said.

Amol also suffered burn injuries to his hand and is undergoing treatment, she said.

"He does odd jobs to make living and has been a habitual drinker," the officer said.

Police have booked Amol under various sections of the IPC for murder and other charges.
