A 30-year-old married woman was shot dead by a man with whom she was purportedly having an extra-marital affair as she was pressurising him to marry her.

Police have arrested the woman's lover, identified as Rohit Rana, who shot dead Rupam Jha on the night of May 9, when she was returning home from a nearby vegetable market in Indirapuram area.

According to police, Rohit and Rupam Jha were in a relationship for several years and Rana also promised her to marry her. Rupam lived with her husband and two children in Nyay Khand-3 area of Indirapuram.

"Rohit told police that Rupam had an extra-marital affair with him and she wanted to marry him, but he was not ready for it. Rupam had been pressurizing Rohit to marry her for a long time. Rupam allegedly threatened Rohit that if he didn't marry her, she would commit suicide," Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP,) Ran Vijay Singh said.

Singh also said that fed up with Rupam's marriage proposal, Rohit then hatched a plan to eliminate her.

"To execute his plan to kill Rupam, he bought a pistol from a youth. On the night of May 9, when Rupam was returning home from a nearby market, Rohit stopped her and shot at her from close range and fled the spot," the DSP added.

Police said that they arrested Rohit today alongwith the youth who had supplied the pistol. Further investigation is on.
