"A woman and her son were today detained for allegedly trying to immolate themselves in front of the police commissioner's office here, officials said.

Officials said that Jashiben Mali and her son, Shailesh Mali, had poured kerosene on themselves and were about to light a match when police personnel, posted at the commissionerate, managed to foil their immolation bid.

The two had alleged that police in their native Sevasi village was harassing them, officials said. The village is on the outskirts of the city and falls within the jurisdiction of Vadodara police.

Officials said that there were accusations of bootlegging against them.

Shailesh Mali today alleged that Vadodara police had raided their house some time ago and had seized Rs 30,000.

"Despite not recovering anything since the raid, the police has been harassing us," he claimed.

Officials said that the two had been detained by Raopura police and further investigations were underway.
