The elephant roaming around in the district after coming down from Bhutan hills along the international border crushed to death Dolly Aldi (65) and demolished several huts at Kumarikata of Baksa district last night, police sources said today.

Earlier on Thursday the pachyderm strayed away from its herd and entered Khunti village under Nagrijuli police station and trampled to death a couple - Mahipal Barman and Swarna Barman - and damaged their house along the Indo-Bhutan border.

Wild elephants come down from the hills of the neighbouring Himalayan kingdom in search of food and create havoc in the area.

The local people alleged that the Forest Department has failed to take measures for guiding the elephant back to the hills or protecting the people against its attacks.
