Woman trampled to death by elephant in C'garh

A 47-year-old womanwas trampledtodeathby anelephanttoday ina village of Chhattisgarh's Raigarh district, police said.

The victim Budhwari Rathiya wasattackedby a wildelephantin the wee hours at Ongna village under Dharamjaigarh police station limits, a police official said.

As per preliminary information, Rathiya and her husband - Mukhiram were sleeping at their open field area in the village to protect their paddy stock.

Meanwhile, the pachyderm had ventured there and attacked the couple, he said.

"While the woman was killed in the incident, her husband managed to escape from the spot, he added.

The kin of the deceased have bee"n given an instant relief amount of Rs 10,000 by the forest department, the official said.
 

The thick forested northern Chhattisgarh, comprising Surguja, Korba, Raigarh, Jashpur and Korea districts, are known for humanelephantconflictincidents.

The region has witnessed several killings of tribals and widespread damages to houses and crops by rogueelephantin past years.
