A woman, who allegedly lifted a newborn baby girl from a government hospital, out of frustration of not being able to conceive, was nabbed by the police within hours and the child was restored to its mother.

The woman was said to have confessed that she could not conceive after an abortion four years ago and dejected over the nasty comments of relatives and neighbours, she had decided to steal a baby, police said.

She had been pretending that she was pregnant since January and used to frequent the hospital under the pretext of check-ups.

According to the police, Jothi, who had given birth to a baby girl three days ago, had handed the infant over to the woman who was standing near her bed.

The woman promptly fled with the child.

Police managed to trace the woman, following information from a taxi driver who had dropped her at her house on the city outskirts. The driver was identified through CCTV footage.

The woman had yesterday told her husband and relatives that she had delivered a girl child and will be coming back with the infant.

After recording her statement, police produced the woman before a Judicial Magistrate's court this morning, which remanded her to judicial custody.
