women construction workers held for trying to lock TASMAC shop

: About 125 workers, including 100 women, affiliated to Tamil Nadu AITUC Construction Workers union, were arrested here today when they tried to lock a government run Tasmac liqour shop as part of their demand to close all liquor shops in Tamil Nadu.

As announced, the women workers proceeded toward the shop in Gandhipuram, when they were stopped and taken into custody, police said.

All of them squatted in the middle of the road and raised slogans in support of their demand to close down all liquor shops in the state as it was affecting the livelihood of the common man, education of young students and also making young women widows, they said.
 

AITUC district secretary, Selvaraj, led the agitation, police said.
