Demanding action against illicit liqour manufacturers and security for the Gram Suraksha Samiti involved in curbing the trade, women of three villagers sat on a dharna and gheraoed Tiwaripur Police Station here.

The woman alleged that police had failed to check the menace of illicit liquor in three villages under Tiwaripur area.

The members of Gram Suraksha Samiti along with the police had raided Ghunghun Kotha village yesterday to check the menace of illicit liquor but liquor manufacturers and traders chased them away instead.

The male members of the Samiti had taken refuge in Uttar Kolia village where women came forward to protect them.

The women of Uttari Kolia, Domingarh and Bansdeeh villages then marched towards Tiwaripur Police Station and sat on a dharna to protest alleged police failure to take action against illicit liquor trade.

They relented only after getting an assurance by senior police officers that action will be taken against illicit liquor traders

According to some women organisations, illicit homemade raw liquor is a big menace in this region and is leading to several socio-economic problems.

Women organisations of the area were demanding a ban on illicit trading for a long time.

Women organisations on their own have destroyed many household production units of illicit liquor in the recent past, but due to the huge magnitude of the operation, close cooperation of police and district administration is required, they said.
