The Assam unit of BJP today claimed that women in Guwahati were not safe under the Congress regime, alleging that BJP national Vice President Bijoya Chakravarty was attacked with stones by activists of that party last night.
"Chakravarty who is also the Lok Sabha member from Guwahati was attacked with stones by Congress activists when she was addressing a meeting for the June 19 Guwahati Municipal Corporation polls near Guwahati railway station," BJP Assam unit President Sarbananda Sonowal told reporters.
"If an MP, national vice president of BJP and a former union minister is not safe in Guwahati, then what will be the condition of common people under the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government. A woman of her stature could not be protected," he alleged.
"Not only the common people have no security, but women are also not safe in Guwahati under Congress rule," he alleged.
"Along with dissension within his party, Gogoi is in a hopeless situation unable to fulfil his poll promises to mitigate Guwahati's problems. He has, therefore, unleashed undesirable elements on the BJP and its workers," Sonowal said.
He informed that a letter has been sent to the state Election Commission here stating that when Chakravarty was addressing a poll meeting, Congress workers from a nearby polling booth tried to disrupt her speech with high pitch mikes, shouting and by pelting stones.
"When the MP wanted to leave the meeting venue a group of about 60 to 70 Congress workers arrived in a vehicle armed with weapons, surrounded Chakravarty and two other companions who are also candidates in Ward No. 10. The Congress activists damaged the vehicle of Chakravarty and physically hurt her," the letter said.
