Majority of women in the country remain marginalised and lead a life of subjugation, drudgery and maltreatment at home and in workplace, Union Minister of State for Women and Child Welfare Krishna Tirath said today.

She regretted that it was despite significant strides made by women in entrepreneurship, science, arts and other fields.

Laying the foundation of Regional Centre of National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCD) at Mohali in Punjab, she said it was unfortunate that an overwhelming number of women were unaware of the schemes and programmes of the government that could raise their status.

She said that women must come forward to fight injustice towards them in the society.

After operationalisation of the Mohali regional centre shortly, the fifth in row after Guwahati, Bangalore, Lucknow and Indore, NIPCCD shall be able to expand its coverage in the northern region and help local women utilise benefits available for them so as to bring them on a par with their male counterparts, she added.

She said the programmes and activities of NIPCCD are targeted at enhancing the knowledge and skills of trainers and field functionaries dealing with women at grassroots level.

"Over the years there has been a progressive increase in number of training programmes conducted and the number of participants at New Delhi headquarters and all its four regional centres," she added.

Punjab Minister for Social Security Surjit Kumar Jiani lauded the efforts of the Centre to promote the cause of women and child welfare.

He said that now the functionaries will no longer have to go to Delhi or Lucknow to get professional training.
