Holding the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government responsible for the rise in number of crimes against women in West Bengal and demanding punishment for the culprits, Left parties organised a protest rally here today.

With frontline leaders including Left Front chairman Biman Bose, Leader of Opposition in state Assembly Surjya Kanta Mishra, Rabin Deb, and former minister Ashim Dasgupta, party workers from 13 districts of the state participated in the rally from Ramleela Ground to College Square this afternoon.

Referring to the death of Howrah youth Arup Bhandari, who was injured while protesting against an eve-teasing, and mentioning other incidents in Kamduni, Park Street and Barasat, Bose alleged the state administration had not taken any action against the culprits, "thus encouraging more and more in crimes against women".

"The state government has not taken any action in any of the incidents... They have either kept mum or have referred to them as trivial matters," he said.

"It's quite surprising that in a state with a woman chief minister, women are not safe and she is not at all moved by the fact," the LF chairman said, claiming that this attitude of Banerjee has encouraged the miscreants in the state.

"We demand immediate action against those who are involved in these incidents," Surjya Kanta Mishra said.

Similar protest rallies were also organised in seven districts of North Bengal today.
