Akhil Bhartiya Janwadi Mahila Samiti warned the police that its activists would launch an anti-police drive across the state if the two youths who had thrown acid on the national volleyball player last evening are not arrested within the next two days.

"The government has failed to check crime against women. This is the third incident of acid attack on girls in Haryana in the recent past, indicating that the women were not safe in the state," Jagmati Sangwan, national vice president of the Samiti said.

17-year-old Ritu Saini, a junior national volleyball player, was hospitalised with serious injuries on her face, arms and chest, after two motorcycle-borne youths threw acid on her while she was going for practice last evening at crowded Prem Nagar Chowk in Rohtak. The youth escape from the spot after the attack.

The woman body also demanded that the government should bear all medical expenses of the victim, who had been admitted to PGIMS, as she belonged to a poor family.

"Since the victim is the national volleyball player at school level, the volleyball association should also come forward for her help," she said.
