Women members of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), set up in connection with the death of a woman in February, today tried to enter the official bungalow of Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh here to protest the state government's order to cremate the deceased.

A big police force, largely comprising women personnel, however, managed to stop them from proceeding further, a police officer said.

The protestors were demanding proper investigation into the death of the 45-year-old woman whose body was found in a paddy field at Samaram Panthak Loukol in Thoubal on February 26 and a bottle of poison was found lying nearby.

While the police said it was a case of suspected suicide, the JAC alleged that the deceased, who was missing since February 22, was murdered.

JAC Convenor AK Memcha said they have been demanding that those responsible for her death be brought to book and also for the government to revoke the cremation order. JAC also vowed to continue the stir.
