Taking serious note of alleged gang rape of a pregnant woman in Sangli district, the Maharashtra State Commission for Women today sought a report from the police.

According to local police, a woman was allegedly raped by eight men at Tasgaon in the district, 380 km from here, on July 31.

The victim was said to be eight months pregnant.

The commission, in its letter to the district Superintendent of Police, cited local media reports and sought to know what action police had taken to arrest the accused.

"Taking into consideration the seriousness of the crime, you (the SP) should personally intervene in the matter and take suitable action. Also submit the report of action taken at the earliest," the letter said.

When contacted, SP Suhel Sharma said that police were probing the case, and would send a report to the commission soon.

Nobody has been arrested in the case so far, a local police official told PTI.
