Women's commission takes suo motu cognizance of Malda incident

Taking suo motu cognizance of the Malda incident wherein the father of a widow was beaten up by a person after he lodged a police complaint, the West Bengal Women's Commission has asked the police to submit a report within 15 days.

"The Women's Commission has taken suo motu cognizance regarding the matter. We have asked the district police superintendent to submit a report within next 15 days," Commission's Chairperson Sunanda Mukherjee said.

Jena Chowdhury was brutally beaten up with iron rods in Malda after he lodged a police complaint against Rintu Sheikh, who allegedly made "indecent proposals" to his 25-year old daughter.
 

Chowdhury had filed the complaint against Sheikh at Pukuria police station on November 8.

Sheikh went to Chowdhury's house at Lakkhighat area yesterday and threatened him for approaching the police and then beat him with iron rods, the police said.

Chowdhury was admitted to Malda Medical College and Hospital with serious injuries, hospital authorities said.
