Women's rights organisations today slammed the West Bengal government for its alleged "inaction" in dealing with crime against women and demanded swift and stringent action against the rapists.

The Left leaning 'All India democratic Women's Association', along with 42 other organisations today held a convention to discuss the reasons and measures to stop the "rising crime against women" in the state.

"The crimes against women are rising in Bengal due to the lethargic and inaction by the state government. This has to stop to make Bengal a safer place for women," said Minati Ghosh of the All India Democratic Women's Association.

The state government should take firm action against the culprits irrespective of the party tag, she said.

Ghosh alleged that tendency to suppress the incidents of rape and molestations abets the culprits, as they have a sense of security.
