Women need to recognise their own potential and learn how to prioritise between work and home, Reena Ramachandran, Founder and President of Forum of Women in Public Sector (WIPS), said today.

"There is no shortcut to success in career. Doing your duty and good work alone is not enough. Women need to acquire knowledge and skills beyond books," she said while talking to PTI on the occasion of International Women's Day.

Expressing concern over the poor representation of women in leadership positions and board rooms, she stressed there is an urgent need for arresting and reversing the trend.

Ramachandran, the former chairman of the state-run Hindustan Organic Chemicals Ltd (HOCL), also said there are a few important life skills which, if practiced effectively, could bring about positive changes in the lives of women.

"Women need to prioritise smartly between home and work in critical situations, diversify their interests, create her own brand and manage their health," she asserted.

Nothing is sustainable unless women learns how to drive and motivate themselves, Ramachandran said

Ensuring the presence of a women member in a selection panel, creating adequate support systems, such as day-care facilities and women's hostels, and creating awareness on the rights of women are essential for bringing about gender equality at home and workplaces, she added.
