Two days after Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari favoured setting up of jetties along inland waterways to facilitate public transport, the state's Water Resources Minister Vinod Palyekar said "any project against the welfare of traditional fishermen would not be allowed".
Palyekar, who was at a function at Vasco today, was responding to a query on the opposition of fishing communities to the jetty plan.
"We have always worked for the welfare of traditional fishermen. If there is anything which goes against their welfare, I would be the first to oppose it," Palyekar today said.
He added that no agreement had been signed between the state and the Union government on the construction of jetties so it would be "unfair" to comment on the issue now.
