British singer Black, known for his wistful 1980s hit "Wonderful Life", died today following a road accident, a statement on his Facebook page said.

"Colin Vearncombe 26/5/1962 - 26/1/2016 You'll Never Walk Alone", said the statement, which used the star's real name and was also posted on his official website.

The 53-year-old singer had spent two weeks in a serious condition in hospital following a crash near Cork, southern Ireland.

He was placed in an induced coma but his condition had deteriorated badly, according to a Facebook update posted on Sunday.

Black's best-known hit, "Wonderful Life", peaked at number eight in Britain's singles chart in 1987 and was also a big hit in a string of other European countries.

The singer was originally from Liverpool in northwest England but had moved to Ireland.
