Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has said that the work on Bhadbhut barrage project over Narmada river in Bharuch district will begin soon.
The barrage, to be built at a cost of Rs 3,000 crore, is aimed at curbing the salinity ingress that has affected potable water sources and local industries.
Bhadbhut barrage is a part of the ambitious Kalpsar project in the state.
It is expected to facilitate use of water for lift irrigation in Bharuch and Ankleshwar and to meet the requirements of industries to be set up at PCPIR (Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemical Investment Region) in Dahej.
"The work on the Bhabhut project on Narmada river will begin soon," Rupani said yesterday after laying the foundation stone of construction of a jetty at Dahej in Bharuch, about 90 kms from here.
The jetty, to be constructed at a cost of Rs 8 crore, will ease the movement of pilgrims for Narmada 'parikrama' (circular journey around the river), Rupani said.
Thousands of pilgrims from Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh travel every year on foot between Amarkantak in and Bhadbhut. The Narmada river originates at Amarkantak and meets Arabian Sea in Bhadbhut.
Rupani also said that the much awaited 'Ro-Ro' (roll-on, roll-off) ferry connecting Ghogha in Saurashtra with Dahej in south Gujarat is expected to begin operations in a couple of months.
