A jar full of old coins was unearthed by labourers engaged in construction work at Bhairavnath temple in Uttarakhand's Pauri district, officials said today.
The pitcher was found when the ground was being dug to construct a gate at the temple in Kathur village of Khirsu block in the district, Gram Pradhan Shravan Thapaliyal said after handing over the jar to the district magistrate here today.
The Archaeological Survey of India experts will ascertain the age andvalue of the coins, ASI official Ashish Kumarsaid.
However, prima facie the coins appear to be over 100-year-old, he said.
The temple premises and adjoining areas may be dug further with a recommendation to the Centre for further research if need be, DM Sushil Kumar said, asking the ASI official and other administrative officials present to keep an eye on the area.
