Workshop for Gujarat umpires in Rajkot

A three-day seminar-cum-training workshop organised by Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) for umpires from Saurashtra region of Gujarat started here today.

"There is a huge requirement of good umpires as many tournaments in different formats are played now a days," Niranjan Shah, honorary secretary of SCA, said while inaugurating it.

The BCCI was encouraging such workshops to find out good umpires with a special focus on former cricket players who wish to become umpires, he said.

Saurashtra has so far produced only two umpires for All India Panel of Umpires -- Jaduvendrasinh Jadeja and Piyush Khakhar -- Shah said. Jadeja passed away recently.
 

As many as 47 participants including two former Ranji players from Saurashtra, Feroz Bambhania and Pratik Mehta, are taking part in the workshop.

Amiesh Shaheba, who has umpired in 51 ODIs, four T-20 matches and three Tests, would be training the participants.
