On this birthday, Hanako, who is also the oldest elephant in Japan celebrated his birthday at the Inokashira Park Zoo situated on the border of the cities of Mitaka and Musashino in western Tokyo.
The ceremony for the birthday celebration was attended by around 800 people yesterday, Kyodo news agency reported.
"I was amazed to see her so spry despite her old age," said Akito Yokoi, a visitor who attended the event.
"She is a star loved by many," said Etsuo Narushima, head of the zoo, expressing hope that Hanako will live as long as possible for her fans.
Born in Bangkok, Hanako was 2 years old when she arrived in Japan from Thailand in 1949 and has been kept at the zoo since 1954.
Since Hanako's actual birthday is unknown the zoo marks her down as a year older every January 1.
