The Western Railway has stepped in to facilitate speedy transport of onions, which have witnessed a bumper production in Gujarat, by operating two additional freight trains.
"On directions of Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, two rakes per day are being loaded at Mahuva and Vartej stations under Bhavnagar division of the Western Railway for transporting onions to different parts of country," the WR stated in a release today.
So far, 41,000 tonnes of onions have been transported from Mahuva and Vartej stations to various cities in North and North Eastern parts of the country.
"Additional rakes will enhance the carrying capacity of onions. This onions will go to Northern, Eastern and North Eastern parts of country and will help in providing extra markets to farmers," it stated.
