The Maharashtra cabinet which met in Mumbai on Sunday has allotted a sum of Rs 687 crore to enhance existing irrigation facilities in Yavatmal, District Guardian Minister Sanjay Rathod here on Monday.
The move is aimed at making Yavatmal and Osmanabad districts free from farmers' suicides in two years, as announced earlier by the Maharashtra Chief Minister's announcement.
Yavatmal district has 1,207 village panchayats and each panchayat would get Rs 1 lakh for its efforts to stop farmers' suicides, he said.
The sum would be utlised for the government sponsored project called Baliraja Chetana Abhiyan, he said.
He said that a sum of Rs 687 crore would be allotted to 16 irrigation projects in the district from 2015-16 to 2017-18.
The break of allotment is, Rs 198 crore for 2015-16, Rs 274 crore for 2016-17 and Rs 215 crore for 2017-18, respectively, he said.
A special office would be opened at the district collectorate under the chairmanship of the District Agriculture Superintending Officer to impart information about goverrnment sponsored schemes to farmers, he said.
The office would survey farmers' suicides and hold review meetings on implementation of government-sponsored schemes meant for farmers, he said.
