"The time has come for the trade unions to come together and move towards a system of one industry-one union," Yechury said while speaking at a programme here.
Lamenting that the share of organised workers in the overall workforce is less than seven per cent, he said the globalisation has brought about a structural change.
"Fragmenting of the working class is also a design of globalisation," the communist leader said alleging that economic exploitation is increasing due to globalisation.
He was speaking at the launch of a book "Working class movement in India in the wake of globalisation" written by Dr Jose George, professor and former head of the department of Civics and Politics of Mumbai University.
