Devotees at the Kukke Subramanya temple in the district today performed 'Yede Snana,' a controversial ritual of rolling over the 'prasadam' offered to the deity.

The ritual which replaced 'Made Snana', wherein devotees roll over leftovers of food of devotees belonging to upper castes, had drawn criticism from various quarters.

The Karnataka Backward Class Awareness Forum had announced three days ago that they would be holding a 'massive' protest in Mysuru on January 15 against such "regressive" religious practices, superstitions. They also wanted the state government to bring in an anti-superstition bill.

Devotees who had come from different parts of the state rolled over the leftovers of the 'prasadam' which was first offered to cows. The ritual would be performed at the temple for three days from today, temple sources said.

The district administration had allowed Yede Snana to be performed in place of Made Snana at the Subramanya temple this year. Several cases are pending before the High Court and Supreme Court on the propriety of conducting such rituals.

Elaborate security arrangements had been made to conduct the ritual today, the sources said.
