Security officials and witnesses say the Saudi-led coalition's airstrikes in Yemen against a Shiite rebel stronghold and prison facility have killed 11 and wounded more than 50 rebels and civilians.

The officials, who remain neutral in the conflict that has splintered the country's security forces, said today that airstrikes hit a security directorate in the western province of Ibb, where the rebels, known as Houthis, held over 300 prisoners underground.

The officials said many managed to escape, but dozens remain buried under the rubble.

Yemen has been torn by a ferocious war pitting the Houthis and forces fighting for former President Ali Abdullah Saleh against the coalition-backed internationally recognized government forces.
