Addressing a media conference here, central committee of the YMA president T Sangkunga and other top leaders alleged that enhancement of the powers of the Lai, Mara and Chakma autonomous district councils would result in "balkanisation" of this tiny hilly north eastern state.

The YMA leaders also lamented that the Gupta Commission recommendations was for all the government departments to be functioning under the autonomous district councils and the state government employees be placed on deputation and their salaries drawn from the state plan fund.

"It would be extremely difficult for the politicians, whether in power or in the opposition to go against the demands of the minority communities especially when elections are approaching," the YMA leaders said, adding that the YMA took up the matter in order to keep the integrity of the Mizo people intact.

The YMA also said that they were against formation of political parties, student associations and even churches on communal lines as that would be against the spirit of the unity of the ethnic Mizos.
