A young woman refused to marry her groom when she came to know that he was 50-year-old and forced the 'barat' (groom's wedding procession) to return in Hapur district.

The brave 21-year-old woman stood her ground even after repeated persuasion by her family and relatives in front of the village panchayat yesterday.

The groom was a resident of Nahali village of Ghaziabad and his marriage was fixed with the young woman, who lived with her family in Asoda village of Hapur.

The girl's parents, who belong to a poor family, reportedly did not tell her about the groom's age and even after the 'barat' reached the spot, they hid all details from their daughter.

"Till the time barat reached Asoda village, everything was normal. As the groom and bride started performing nikah, girl came to know that her groom was 50-year-old which angered her. Thereafter, the girl stood up and told her parents that she could not marry him because of his age," said a villager.

He also said that after refusing to marry her "old groom", her parents, relatives and some villagers tried to convince her, but she did not relent.

"After sticking to her stand, a panchayat was immediately called at the marriage venue and they also asked the bride to proceed with the rituals. Despite this, the girl made it clear that she cannot marry him at any cost," the villager added.

After few hours, the 'barat' had to return without the bride.

As nobody from the groom or bride's side has lodged any complaint, no case has been registered in this regard.
