A youth was arrested after country-made pistols and live bullets were recovered from him at a metro station in southern part of the city, police said here today.

Deb Kumar Maity (25) was arrested by Railway Police Force (RPF) with three pistols, five bullets, one laptop and two mobile phones besides a voter identity card bearing his name and photograph while he was trying to enter Gitanjali Metro station last night, a senior officer of Kolkata Police said.

Acting on a tip-off from Kolkata Police, RPF intercepted Maity at the entry point and scanned the bag he was carrying and found the arms, he said.

Maity has told police that the arms and ammunitions was kept at his house at Falta because of some family feud and as per his elder brother's instructions and he was trying to dispose them, the officer said.

"His reasons for carrying the arms and ammunitions were not satisfactory and he was arrested by RPF and handed over to the police who has booked him under the Arms Act.

"A probe is on and we are probing all possible angles into the matter. We are also verifying his details," he said.

Maity, a resident of Falta Jaffarpur of South 24 Parganas district has done his masters in Geography and was staying in a paying guest accommodation in New Alipore area of the city, he said.

Meanwhile, following yesterday's terrorist attack in Punjab Kolkata Police today sought a report from Metro Railways authorities on the scanners installed at the entrance to the Metro platforms.

The step was taken after Kolkata Police received complaints on non-operational scanners at most of the Metro stations.
