Additional Sessions Judge Suresh Chand Rajan asked Vinod Kumar to report to south-west Delhi's Deputy Commissioner of police (traffic) in the morning for five days for assisting police at busy traffic signals.
Modifying the jail sentence, the sessions court said as Kumar has no criminal history and is a young boy doing a private job, "it would meet the ends of justice if he is given an opportunity to mend himself and learn the norms of civic society".
"The simple imprisonment of five days awarded to the appellant (Kumar) is modified and now he is directed to report to the DCP (traffic)..., in the morning who will depute him to assist the traffic police officials on duty at any busy traffic red light under his jurisdiction in managing/diverting traffic from 10 am to 5 pm for five days with effect from January 23," the court said.
Kumar came to the sessions court seeking leniency after a magisterial court had on November 17, 2012 sentenced him to five days in jail with a fine of Rs 2,000 for driving his vehicle under the influence of liquor at Dwarka.
Seeking leniency, Kumar's counsel told the ASJ that he was not aware of the consequences of pleading guilty.
The counsel further argued Kumar be released as being in the company of hardcore criminals his entire life may spoil him.
