Youth cheats girl on pretext of marriage, dupes of Rs 5 lakh

A youth allegedly posed as a businessman on a match making website and duped a girl's family of Rs 5 lakh on the pretext of marriage, police said.

The victim, a resident of Kakadev area here had posted her details on a match making website, following which a trader from Ahmedabad, identified as Rusit introduced himself as a businessman and approached the girl for marriage, Ashutosh Pandey, Inspector General Kanpur zone said.

According to the girl's complaint, on April 11, the accused came to Kanpur and met the girl's father in a hotel, he said.

Two days later, Rusit expressed his desire of starting a new business in Kanpur for which the girl's family offered him financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh, the IG said.
 

On April 15, the accused took the girl to Ahmedabad and introduced her to his relatives where May 8 was fixed as the engagement date, Pandey said.

While on their way back, he gave a cheque of Rs 20 lakh to the girl for the arrangements of engagement ceremony, he said.

On the day of the engagement, he informed the girl's family that he will not be able to reach because of some technical snag in his flight, following which the date of engagement was postponed to 16th the same month, he said.

But neither Rusit nor his family members turned up for the ceremony, after which the girl's family contacted him but he misbehaved and allegedly threatened to kill them, the IG said.

During this time, when the girl's family members tried to pay for the engagement expenses, it became clear that the cheque given by Rusit was forged, he said.

The victim and her father then approached the police and filed a complaint, he said.

Pandey said that a team is being sent to Ahmedabad to investigate into the matter.

A case has been registered against the accused and further investigations are on, he said.
