Family members of a youth, who had allegedly committed suicide by consuming poisonous substance in front of the office of a private local immigration consultancy service, today protested before it alleging that it had duped the youth.

26-year-old Sukhwant Singh allegedly committed suicide in front of the immigration consultancy service office three days back, police said today.

Today, the relatives of the Sukhwant Singh held a protest outside the local immigration consultancy office here. They alleged that the immigration consultancy service office had taken Rs 2.5 lakh from Sukhwant on the pretext of sending him to Canada on a work visa. But they did not send him and were also refusing to return the money to him.

"He was upset that the company was not returning Rs 2.5 lakh, which it had taken from him around two years ago after promising to send him to Canada on work visa. They also failed to send him to Canada as promised and instead kept harassing him," the victim's uncle Sampuran Singh, alleged.

Police said that a case under relevant provisions of the law had been registered against the management of the consultancy group.

Sukhwant Singh was a resident of Chatha Gobindpura village at Sangrur. He was working as a development officer of a private bank at Patran.

Meanwhile, there were angry protests today outside the company's office here as many people from different parts of Punjab including Patiala and Ludhiana, who alleged they too had been duped in similar fashion, had also gathered here.

No official from the company was available for comment.
