Youth dies as roof of toilet collapses in Delhi

An unidentified youth was killed today when he got buried under the rubble as the roof of a public toilet collapsed in northwest Delhi's Jahangirpuri area here.

The incident took place in the wee hours following which some passerby made a PCR call saying that the roof of the public toilet, which was closed years ago for public use, has collapsed.

A police team rushed to the spot and the youth was rescued from the rubble with the help of fire fighters. He was rushed to the Babu Jag Jivan Ram hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

According to police, the victim could be a vagabond as the facility had been closed years ago and it was used by some by vagabonds to consume drugs. He could not be identified till late evening.
 

"We have found some cigarettes and other items suggesting the same. The public toilet was in a dilapidated condition and several complaints were made in this regard to the civic agencies but no action was taken. We have registered a case of negligence at the local police station against unknown persons and taken up investigation," said a senior police official.

When contacted, the North Corporation said the community toilet complex had been taken over by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) in December last year.

In a similar incident, a 50-year-old woman was injured after the wall of a community hall collapsed in Mukherjee Nagar area of north Delhi. The incident took place in Dhakka village and the victim has been identified as Premvati.
