A 23-year-old youth died due to heat stroke, becoming the first victim of the searing heat wave that has gripped the city, officials said.

The victim, identified as Suraj Pal, a resident of Narol locality, fell unconscious and collapsed yesterday due to severe heat. He was rushed to a government hospital for treatment, but died late last night during treatment, an official of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) said.

"Pal was working in the open, when he suffered heat stroke and collapsed. He was rushed to LG Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment. However, he died late last night," in-charge medical officer, AMC, Bhavin Solanki said.

Several parts of the state are reeling under heat wave, with temperatures soaring above 43 degrees Celsius, prompting the state government to put district hospitals on alert.

The government has directed hospitals to provide immediate medical assistance to the people affected by heat stroke.
