A 21-year-old youth today drowned in a sacred pond at Gurudwara Manji Sahib in Ambala City, police said.

Surjit, a resident of Panjokhra village, had come to the Gurudwara to pay obeisance to Guru Granth Sahib with his friend, Gurpreet, they said.

Surjit is suspected to have strayed into deep water, ACP Hitesh Yadav said.

Gurpreet raised an alarm when Surjit was not visible in the pond, where he had gone for a bath.

The Gurudwara management and police were informed, following which divers recovered his body.

Surjit's body was handed to his relatives after the postmortem was conducted at the civil hospital.
