Guwahati police today arrested a 23-year-old youth for allegedly raping and killing a college girl.

Two days back, body of a 20-year old college student was found without any clothes in the city's Noonmati area, just few hours after she had left home.

"We have arrested a youth, identified as Akbar Ali. Though he is saying that he did not rape her, we are not believing him and continuing our investigation," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Guwahati Central) Amitava Sinha said.

Although the post mortem report is awaited to confirm the rape, the police is treating it as a case of rape and murder on the basis of the condition of the body, he added.

"The accused is a labourer and hails from Barpeta district.

He claimed that the girl was strangulated," Sinha said, adding further investigation is on to ascertain if more persons were involved in the crime.

Yesterday, Guwahati Police Commissioner Mukesh Agrawal had announced to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under an ACP to probe and nab the culprits of the crime.

"The incident is very sad and unfortunate. We have formed an SIT to crack the case. The ACP of the Noonmati range will head it. We are going full throttle," Agrawal said.
