A youth has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping her 8-year-old cousin sister for ransom in Sangam Vihar area, police said today.

Rakesh Kumar (24) was arrested yesterday after the victim's father registered a complaint in this regard.

"Kumar had failed in several businesses and was in debt. To come out of debt, he kidnapped the girl and demanded Rs 4.70 lakh as ransom," Additional Commissioner of Police (Outer) Sanjay Kumar.

The incident came to light yesterday when 37-year-old Vijay Kumar reported that his daughter Ashmita has been kidnapped by his nephew Rakesh Jha who was demanding Rs 4.70 lakh for the safe return of his daughter, police said.

Rakesh was the son of Vijay Kumar Jha's brother-in-law Kulanand Jha and was living with his uncle Vijay for the last 3-4 years. He started investing in share market but lost all his money.

In the hope of making good the losses he suffered, he borrowed a lot of money and reinvested in share market but again suffered losses and became debt-ridden.

"He lured Ashmita in the name of taking her out for sight- seeing in Delhi. However, he took her to a friend's house and kept her there. Rakesh demanded Rs 4.70 lakh to let go Vijay's daughter and also threatened him with dire consequences if he approached police," said Kumar.

After a complaint was registered, Rakesh was nabbed from Sangam Vihar area while he was trying to escape and the girl was rescued, police said.
