A 21-year-old man was today arrested for allegedly raping and murdering a 13-year-old girl in Gaura village of the district, police said today.
Santosh Kumar (21) was arrested within hours of the rape and murder of the girl in a field in Guara village yesterday, SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu.
Santosh was nabbed at dawn today while he was waiting to board a train from the Ludhiana railway station to his native place in Bihar, said SSP Sidhu.
Kumar, who had been stalking the girl for the past one month, committed the crime when the girl was returning home from her tuition. When the girl resisted Kumar's attack, he hit her with a brick on the head, leading to her death, the SSP said.
The accused worked as a servant for a farmer in the village.
The girl, a resident of the village, had gone for tuition yesterday and when she did not return, her family informed police after which a search was launched.
Her body was found on the fields with severe injury marks on the head.
