Mohammad Aarif, a resident of west Patel Nagar, was arrested recently for his involvement in stealing the umbrella from the gurdwara in Rajinder Place.

The action came on a complaint filed by Bhai Amir Singh, priest at the gurdwara, that a silver chhatra hanging over the holy book was missing from Monday last.

During investigation, police got a clue that Aarif could be involved in this case and arrested him on Thursday.

"Initially, he did not confess his crime but during sustained interrogation he finally broke down and admitted his involvement. One silver chhatra was also recovered from his house," Devesh Chandra Srivastva, Additional Commissioner of Police, Central District, said.

Arif was earlier arrested for stealing gold mukut and a sliver chhatra.

"He is a habitual thief. Since early days, he started stealing valuables from temples and gurdwaras," he said.
