The incident happened in Gauri Bazar area in Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh yesterday.
One Jai Prakash Sharma of Pachaiya village had received a threatening letter demanding Rs one lakh and a panchayat was called to discuss the matter, police said.
As Ganesh Prasad was being questioned, some villagers soundly thrashed him, they said.
