A youth was run over by a truck being driven by alleged cow-smugglers, sparking angry protests by locals here who went on a rampage today damaging public property and holding up traffic.

Officials said it was in the afternoon that Gurgaon district and police officials managed to clear the blockade put up by Jamalpur Chowk villagers on the Gurgaon-Pataudi Road and on the railway track near Tajnagar.

The locals were agitating over the death of a youth who hailed from Khawaspur.

Police said that the deceased, identified as Vikrant (24), was hit by a truck in which cows were being smuggled on Saturday night. According to villagers, the youth had given chase on a motorbike after the truck suspected to be ferrying the cattle refused to stop at a checkpost.

Police have registered a murder case against unknown persons while six of its personnel, who were on duty at the Jamalpur checkpost last night, have been suspended for negligence.

The Gurgaon district administration has also announced a compensation for the next of kin of the deceased.
