Family members of a 25-year-old youth, who died in a road accident involving a rashly driven truck last year, have been awarded a compensation of over Rs 30 lakh by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here.

The tribunal directed the New India Insurance Company Ltd, with which the offending truck was insured, to pay Rs 30,64,168 to the wife, two children and parents of victim Vinod Bisht.

"Therefore, considering all the documents filed by the petitioners (family of Bisht) as a whole it is clear that respondent no.1 (truck driver) was driving the vehicle in a rash and negligent manner," MACT Presiding Officer Sanjay Kumar Singh said.

Bisht's family members, residents of Uttarakhand, said in their petition that the accident took place on the night of October 13, 2013 when the victim was going on his motorcycle.

When he reached at outer ring road flyover near Civil Lines here, the offending truck rashly and negligently driven by Satnam Singh hit Bisht.

Due to the impact, he fell down and died on the spot.

Family members of Bisht, who was earning around Rs 11,000 per month, had sought a compensation of Rs 50 lakh.

The truck driver denied that he was driving the vehicle in a rash and negligent manner and also claimed that the contents of the petition were false.
