A 22-year-old youth was stabbed to death and six others were injured when two groups allegedly clashed over not paying for a cigarette in Khajoori Khas area here, police said today.

The deceased, identified as Sabir Hussain, succumbed to his injuries in a hospital late last night after he was stabbed by a group of six people when he had confronted them as they were not paying for a cigarette bought from his mother's shop.

The incident happened on October 6 when the group bought a cigarette from the deceased's mother. When they started leaving the shop without paying for the cigarette, an argument broke out with Sabir, following which Sabir's brothers and other people also reached the spot.

"In the ensuing quarrel, the two groups clashed with knives and Sabir was grievously injured while six others were also injured," said a police official.

The police registered a case under section 308 of IPC (attempt to commit culpable homicide) against the first group and section 307 of IPC (attempt to murder) against members of Sabir's family. Sabir's body was handed over to his relatives following the postmortem.
