A 21-year old man was killed when a private bus ran over him just as he overtook it in a bid to pull up the driver after the vehicle allegedly brushed against his two-wheeler here, triggering a protest by CPI-M and DFYI activists seeking action against the crew today.
A case had been registered against the bus crew who are abscondingsince the incident last evening and investigation was on, police said.
The private bus had brushed against Aloysius James' motorcycle. Though he attempted to question the driver about the incident, the latter started the vehicle without responding to him.
Enraged, James chased the bus and overtook it at some distance away. But the driver allegedly did not notice the youth and continued to drive on.
James got trapped under the wheels and died on the spot, police said.
Demanding immediate action against the crew for 'mowing down' the youth,around 100 volunteers of DYFI and CPI-M today staged a picketing on Kannur Road here, police said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police D Sali intervened and assured them of necessary action, following which the agitators called off their nearly hour-long protest, police added.
