YSR Congress demanded a high level probe into the incident where a new born baby was allegedly attacked by rats in a government hospital based in Guntur recently.

YSR Congress party MLC Ummareddy Venkateswarlu told reporters here today that the Andhra Pradesh Health Minister's statement which said that doctors are not at fault even before a departmental inquiry began, is highly objectionable.

"We demand that an inquiry by a high-level committee should be ordered to bring out the facts so that those who are guilty are punished," Venkateswarlu said, adding that the AP government announcing an ex-gratia payment and a mandatory departmental inquiry into the incident are not sufficient.

"The AP Health Minister (K Srinivas) had visited the hospital and saw its functioning with his own eyes. The incident brings to the fore, negligence on part of officials. We demand a high-level committee probe into the issue in order to bring out the facts," Venkateswarlu added.

A 10-day-old infant had died of rodent bites in the intensive care unit of a government hospital in Guntur yesterday.
