The Jammu and Kashmir government has removed Zanskar MLA from the post of Vice Chairman of the state's Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board and withdrawn the Minister of State status conferred on him.

Commissioner-Secretary to the Government of J&K, Khurshid Ahmad, said in an order that Syed Mohammad Baqir Rizvi has been removed from the post.

"The status of Minister of State (MoS) conferredupon him isalso withdrawn with immediate effect," he said.

While no reason has been given for his sacking in the order, sources said he was removed for ditching PDP in support of its ally BJP during the Legislative Council elections yesterday.

The PDP candidate lost the poll to the BJP nominee.

Asked if the MLA cross-voted and violated the norms by voting in favour of BJP candidate, Assembly Speaker Kavinder Gupta told PTI the party Whip is meant for the party not an Independent member.

Rizvi was made the Vice Chairman by the PDP-led government and given the status of an MoS.
