Zinc prices rose 0.80 per cent to Rs 126.05 per kg in futures trade today as traders created fresh positions, tracking a firm trend overseas.

The exchange remained closed for the morning session on account of 'Mahavir Jayanti'.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, zinc for delivery in April month was trading higher by Re 1, or 0.80 per cent, to Rs 126.05 per kg in business turnover of 1,989 lots.

Likewise, the metal for delivery in May contracts traded higher by 75 paise, or 0.60 per cent to Rs 126.75 per kg in 66 lots.

Analysts said participants built up fresh positions on the back of a firm global trend where zinc strengthened as stockpiles on the London Metal Exchange (LME) dropped to the lowest since 2009, signaling global supplies are shrinking.

Globally, zinc for delivery in three months rose 1.2 per cent to USD 1,894 a metric tonne on the LME.
