Industrial development without inclusive growth of small units is unthinkable. And for healthy SME growth, “best practices” is the new mantra doing the rounds in Uttarakhand.

Under the new initiative, GTZ, a German service provider, has joined hands with various organisations in Uttarakhand to adopt “best practices” in SMEs to boost their production and financial health.

A four-day workshop would be organised to educate the SMEs about the concept. The GTZ, which is active in India on the behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, has also roped in Stanley David, a British trade adviser and international marketing consultant, to share his expertise in cobbling up joint ventures and collaborations between SMEs in India and Britain.

GTZ intends to launch campaigns at different levels to provide SMEs an insight into proactive best practices that they can imbibe into their day-to-day functioning. Rajshree Shukla, senior technical expert, GTZ, says: “The new initiatives are coming in the face of changes taking place across sectors as a result of globalisation.”

The term “best practice” refers to those practices that have produced outstanding results in another situation and could be adapted with a sector-wise approach. A best practice is a technique or methodology which leads to desired results.

These practices include saving energy and water consumption, managing waste in an eco-friendly way and better management of men, machines and money.

The focus of best practices is also on forging alliances, creating differentiation in terms of product development and marketing. Managing Intellectual property rights is one way of enhancing the global acumen that also forms part of good practices.

Raising funds from time to time also gives the company leverage to compete globally.

The Industries Association of Uttarakhand (IAU), which is also involved in the best practices awareness campaign, has expressed its commitment to widen the scope of the initiative among various small enterprises in the hill state.

Pankaj Gupta, President, IAU, says: “We must adopt the new global trends. These are healthy for industrial development and boost growth.”

Welcoming the initiative, Sudhir Chandra Nautiyal, additional director, Industries, said steps like these would go a long way towards healthy growth of SME sector in the hill state.
